County Budget

Friday, September 12, 2008

The question about the budget isn’t about whether any of us like to pay taxes.

The question is, are we getting good value for what the county spends?  Franklin County is providing funding for activities that are enjoyed by the public.  We have 3 ball fields that we maintain; we have a new boat ramp off of Bluff Road, a new boat ramp on St. George Island, and several other boat ramp areas we maintain.  We’ve purchased property at the two-mile area and the Indian Creek park site which will allow access to our seafood workers and tourists.  We maintain the Carrabelle Beach Park and a public area on St. George Island.   The County has to maintain roads and bridges and we have to maintain and operate the county landfill.  We provide for law enforcement and we provide emergency management services.  We also provide a library system, an office to service our veterans, and an agricultural/extension office.  We are mandated by the Florida Legislature to fund certain activities with one of the most expensive involving the court system.  We are mandated to provide ambulance service, and have made endeavors to improve that service over the past years.

Franklin County provides monetary assistance to non-profit organizations including the Humane Society, the Literacy Program, the Boys & Girls Club, Refuge House, Elder Care Services, Senior Citizens, and Franklin’s Promise.  We have provided funds to the Franklin County Health Department.  All these organizations provide much needed services to a wide variety of citizens.

Balancing the needs of the community with the revenues required is a difficult challenge, and Franklin County strives to meet that challenge.
